SOS for the NHS
Nationwide health survey launched
The Liberal Democrats have launched a nationwide survey into
people’s views on the NHS. It is part of a major national campaign
to save the NHS from Labour’s cuts and incompetence.
The campaign calls for an end to savage NHS cuts, for the
Government to stop wasting billions of pounds of health spending,
and for local people to have more say over local health services.

3 steps to save the NHS:
- Stop the cuts
- Cut the waste
- Give us back our NHS
Let's cut class sizes to 15!

The Liberal Democrats say that
infant school class sizes should be
cut to 15, and that action is needed
to close the performance gap
between children from rich and poor
families.

The party has unveiled policies that
include:
- Cutting infant class sizes to 15
- Using £2.5bn of additional funding
to close the gap between children
from rich and poor families
- Scrapping the 600 page national
curriculum and replacing it with a
slimmed-down minimum curriculum
entitlement
- Setting up an independent Education Standards Authority to restore confidence in standards

After 12 years of Labour, there is still a yawning gap between state and private schools, and
between the life chances of rich and poor pupils.

Liberal Democrat policies aim to close these gaps to ensure that all children can rely on high quality
state-funded education to enable all them to fulfil their potential.

Our plans would slash class sizes in infant schools - where small class sizes matter most - and
boost funding for the children who need it most.

Our Pupil Premium would bring the funding of the most disadvantaged pupils up to private school
levels.
FORCES FOCUS:
The Culture of Incompetence
at the heart of Defence policy

The National Audit Office's ‘Ministry of Defence: Major Projects Report 2008′ report describes the
current state of the MoD’s twenty largest procurement projects. It makes for depressing reading.
Cumulatively, the twenty projects are now expected to enter service 483 months behind schedule -
a 96-month increase on last year’s figure of 387 months.

Just as disappointingly, the aggregate cost of these projects has risen by £205 million over the last
12 months. The projects themselves are now £3 billion over budget, and, considering the MoD’s
record, there is little doubt that that figure will rise over the next 12 months.

Whilst the MoD’s incompetence doesn’t help, blame for these delays and extra costs lies squarely
with the Government. Miscalculations and hopelessly unrealistic expectations have taken a massive
toll on Britain’s already overstretched defence budget. In the last year alone, the delays facing these
projects have increased by a length of time which exceeds the period of the Second World War.

Besides underlining the Government’s inability to manage major procurement projects, these
figures strengthen the case for a new Strategic Defence Review. A far-reaching Review is needed
to re-establish the balance between preparing for the wars of today and the threats of tomorrow
within the available resources.

Our forces are experiencing critical overstretch, inadequate equipment and prolonged
tours of duty whilst abroad - and substandard housing, insufficient welfare provisions and
questionable support when back home.

Lib Dem petition to Downing Street demanding
a halt to post office closures
Save Our Post Offices

The Government is looking to close at least 2500
post offices throughout the UK. A rolling programme
of closures is being carried out and no area of the
country will escape without the loss of branches.

These closures will be the death knell for many
communities across the country. Villages that have
already lost their school and shops, elderly residents
in the suburbs who risk losing their independence
and the poorest in our inner cities all now face a
bleaker future.

Liberal Democrats are opposed to the closure of post offices. The post office has always been an
integral part of community life; so many people rely on their post office. These closures represent
the worst of Britain, an uncompassionate and faceless society. We must persuade the Prime
Minister and the Business Secretary to stop shutting down our post offices and invest in improving
the services they can offer, to support them for the long-term.

The Government are trying to claim there is no alternative to the
closure programme. They are wrong. The Liberal Democrats have
put forward a fully funded plan for an additional £2 billion investment
in the Post Office that would create a thriving network.
